I recently traveled to the West Texas town of Marfa (pop. 2,000) to work on an NEA-funded public art project sponsored by the Marfa Studio of Arts. This large (7 ft. by 20”) streetside ceramic tile mural inspired by local flora is scheduled for completion in spring 2006. See the mural mockup here.

Marfa is surrounded by high desert beauty and is a gateway to the remarkable Big Bend National Park. Marfa is also widely known as home to Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation and its contemporary art collection; the Marfa mystery lights (an unexplained natural phenomenon) and as the location for the 1950’s James Dean epic “Giant.”
